Sony Xperia 1 VIII: HUGE Camera Redesign & New AI Assistant! (2026)

Sony's Xperia 1 VIII marks a significant departure from the brand's previous design language, introducing a bold and innovative camera module that sets it apart from its competitors. This move is a refreshing change for a company that has been criticized for its lack of design innovation in recent years. The new design is a unique blend of Apple's aesthetic and Motorola's Edge phones, with a square camera island that slopes towards the edge of the device. This design choice is not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional, as it allows for a larger sensor in the telephoto lens, which is a significant upgrade over the previous model. The larger sensor is almost four times bigger than the one in the Xperia 1 VII, and it's comparable to the ones found in the Vivo X300 Ultra and Xiaomi 17 Ultra. This upgrade could make the telephoto lens one of the best in the market, provided Sony gets the processing right. However, the trade-off is the loss of the continuous optical zoom feature, which is a bit of a disappointment. The camera system as a whole has been improved with a new RAW multi-frame processing pipeline, better bokeh, and updated macro shooting that now supports autofocus. The AI camera assistant is a welcome addition, suggesting different options for filters, framing, and lens selection, as well as fine-tuned tweaks like brightening the subject without affecting the background. This feature is more powerful than Google's Pixel 10 phones' AI Camera Coach, although some may prefer the manual activation of Google's mode. The Xperia 1 VIII also comes with new full-stage stereo speakers, tuned together with Sony Pictures and Sony Music, which are clearer and louder than before. The battery and charging specifications remain the same, but Sony claims the phone will last an hour longer thanks to some optimizations under the hood. The device is powered by the latest Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, with up to 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage, although only the online-only gold finish offers this storage capacity. The phone starts from £1,399 for the standard model with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, and goes up to £1,849 for the 16GB/1TB model. The Xperia 1 VIII is available to order now in Europe and Asia, but there are no plans for a North American launch. Personally, I think Sony has made a bold move with the Xperia 1 VIII, and it's a refreshing change to see the company pushing the boundaries of design and innovation. However, the lack of a North American launch and the limited OS and security updates are a bit concerning. Overall, the Xperia 1 VIII is a powerful and feature-rich device that shows Sony's commitment to pushing the boundaries of what a smartphone can be.
